The History of Meșendorf

Meșendorf is a Saxon village documented since 1289, part of the commune of Buneşti, along with Criţ, Roadeş, Buneşti and Viscri.

The village is located in the valley of some hills full of hayfields, pastures and forests of Rupea area, about 30 km away from Sighisoara and 95 km away from Brasov . To get here, you have to pass Buneşti until you see a road sign directing you to Criţ. The entrance is through this village on a road that continues for another 4 km. The landscape and the rural atmosphere of the place gradually conquer you, as you drive up the cobbled street that makes its way between the rows of old Saxon houses, guarded by tall pear trees that bear those yellow juicy pears.

At the 1322 census of the domains belonging to the former Cârța monastery of the Cistercian order, the first written proof of the existence of the locality under the name Messendorf appears. In a document from 1356 the locality appears under the name Mesche, and in 1448 with the Latin name villa Meschonis. A strong fire destroyed almost the entire locality in 1469. Starting with 1474, when the Cistercian monastery Cârța was abolished, the locality came under the administration of the Sighișoara Chair.

About the fortified church in Meșendorf

The fortress church in Meşendorf was built in the 14th century, in the style of the early Gothic. Restoration work began in 1701, and in 1888, parts of the outer circular wall and the inner tower wall were demolished as the building materials were needed for the new school. In 1958, the southwest tower and the eastern part of the circular wall were also demolished due to the risk of collapse. The altar with the two mobile wings and the two fixed ones was built after the model of an older altar. The altar paintings represent biblical scenes. In 1923, the altar was renovated and four new images depicting the apostles were painted. The organ from 1765 was replaced with a new one in 1923. During the repair works, a wooden box containing the church documents written in Latin was found in the roof of the tower, and when the minister preached in church he read both in Latin and German what was written in those documents. Afterwards, the documents were sealed back in the wooden that was then put back where it was found. Today they can still be found in the same place.
